Hello Everyone! Meet Maya from Wholesome Yum! Her blog is full of delicious recipes for your keto lifestyle.
We asked Maya to tell us a little bit more about herself...
I founded Wholesome Yum in 2015 as a way to save and share my low carb recipes, but never dreamed it would grow into the business it is today. I'm passionate about the low carb lifestyle and feel lucky to be able to share it with others. Something interesting about me would be that I'm originally from Russia but grew up in the U.S. (since I was five).
What was your inspiration to start eating a low carb keto diet?
Primarily, I wanted to feel better. I was tired of having mood swings and being on a blood sugar roller coaster. I did want to lose a little weight as well, but my biggest goal was to take control of my health and well-being. I have a family history of obesity, diabetes, and heart disease, and wanted to prevent myself from going down the same path.
Since you started the low carb KETO lifestyle how has it changed your overall health?
I feel better overall and have much more energy. I went from having mood issues and sugar crashes, to being passionate and motivated, with stable energy levels.
Did you lose weight? If so do you mind share how much?
I lost some, but I was within a healthy weight range before. I have definitely seen improvements in other ways. In addition, I stayed mostly low carb through both my pregnancies; I gained very minimal (but still healthy) weight during each, had healthy babies, and lost it all very quickly after.
How has it changed you and your perspective on life?
The biggest change has been my outlook on treating mental or physical ailments. I am definitely a proponent of science and Western medicine, but I think that we can be too quick to prescribe pills before looking at other factors. Examining the food we eat often gets overlooked and this is a big mistake. It has such a huge impact on our well-being!
What is your favorite low carb keto food or recipe?
It's so hard to pick just one! My top three are taco salad, fathead pizza, and eggs in any form.
Do you have some advice for someone just starting out?
Start simple! You don't need complicated recipes or specialty ingredients to eat keto and low carb. Focus primarily on low carb vegetables, meat, and eggs. Once you get the hang of it, then you can add in keto baked goods if you have the desire.
